Doula’s, Nurse’s, and Sisterhood by means of Support:
Many pregnant women only have themselves, a single partner, a parent or a friend in their perinatal phase. Blessed as those with a strong, reliable and thoughtful support system. There are birthing parents only consider having an Obstetrician and Gynecologist as their sole provider or none. Others, may want the works. I am, “other’s”. Due to the fact that I am, “alone” in my home state, I need it all. My father is in one state, my paternal aunts are in another. They all are hours away. I am sure that my father will come to check in on me, cook and provide necessary break. My aunts Sharon, Rita and Judith stated they will do the same. However, these sweet and generous souls have children and grandchildren of their own.
What exactly is a “Doula”? “a trained professional who provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to a mother before, during and shortly after childbirth to help her achieve the healthiest, most satisfying experience possible. Countless scientific trials examining doula care demonstrate remarkably improved physical and psychological outcomes for both mother and baby. Doulas have a positive impact on the well-being of the entire family” (DONA International). Previously at this point in time ( 10/ 26/2021), I was a DONA member and trained in post-partum care by DONA International.
What exactly is Nursing? “Nursing encompasses autonomous and collaborative care of individuals of all ages, families, groups and communities, sick or well and in all settings. It includes the promotion of health, the prevention of illness, and the care of ill, disabled and dying people. Nurses play a critical role in health care and are often the unsung heroes in health care facilities and emergency response. They are often the first to detect health emergencies and work on the front lines of disease prevention and the delivery of primary health care, including promotion, prevention, treatment and rehabilitation” (World Health Organization). We are licensed healthcare professionals that have undergone extensive science based curriculums on nursing and healthcare, passed our boards and obtained licensure to practice. I started my journey as a Certified Nurse’s Aide (CNA), Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) and currently, Registered Nurse (RN).
Sisterhood as we know, does not always have to be biological. Our friends, healthcare advocates and caregivers that we meet along the way can create this. We weave in and out of each other’s lives briefly, we have lives of our own. However, whenever it is necessary we are there to support each other. This may be in person or virtually. In this new era of technology, we are growing to appreciate the support, advice and comfort of someone that we have never met. I truly believe that this is not only beneficial but necessary for our survival.
On our Instagram, we drop gems daily that inspire, motivate and support our audience. Whether one is alone or feels alone, this community is here to intercede and provide the support needed in this delicate time. Every birth plan, desire and outcome is different. There should be a sisterhood to support them all. That starts with education, support, and advocacy at Wombberry Company.
